Local Tiger Times journalist Kali Walter recently wrote an opinion piece about whether or not ASB kids are privileged, which sparked massive debates on the Elsinore High School campus. Walter was criticized and ostracized by multiple students on campus, including elected ASB officials. Students and faculty were telling her that she had to delete her article, and that she quote unquote “divided the school,” a school which Kali feels was already heavily divided.

However, whether or not you or I or anyone else agrees with her opinion, she does not have to delete her piece. Under the first amendment of the United States’ Constitution, Americans have the right to free speech. Kali did not use any hate speech, nor did she threaten anyone, therefore her words are valid and legal to use. Kali was just exercising her right as an American by expressing an opinion that she and many other people on campus have. No one should fear expressing their beliefs nor should they receive any backlash from those who disagree with them.

The ASB leaders who are confronting her aggressively should try talking to her rationally instead. True leaders don’t attack those who dislike them or disagree with them; they try to work out their differences with respect, character, diplomacy, humility, and dignity. If the ASB kids really want people to respect them as leaders, then they need to treat everyone else with respect too (which includes respecting their right to free speech and opinions); it’s that simple.
