Jacob Blake

Jacob Blake

Jacob Blake, a twenty-nine year old African American man, was seriously injured and paralyzed from the waist down by police during an arrest. He was shot seven times by Rusten Sheskey on August 23, 2020, during an arrest. Video shows Jacob walking back to his his car and going into the driver’s seat, and that’s when Shesky pulled him back by his white shirt and shot him seven times, while Jacob’s kids were sitting in the backseat. After the seven shots were fired, the other officers kept pointing their guns and waited for an ambulance. When they got to a hospital, Jacob cried and told his mother he was sorry. “His kids are his world. But not only that, his family is his world,” says Zietha Blake. “He’s upset because we’re hurt, we’re upset. He doesn’t even care about himself. He’s more so worried about us.”

Jacob Blake is just another unarmed African American who has been shot by police. He is the latest, along with George Floyd, who had a knee to his neck for nearly ten minutes, Breonna Taylor, who was asleep on her couch and shot eight times, Atatiana Jefferson, who was at home with her eight-year-old nephew and shot through a window by police, Stephon Clark, who was standing in his grandmother’s backyard when police believed he was holding a gun, which was a mobile phone and he was shot more than twenty times, Botham Jean, who was at home sitting on his couch eating ice cream when an off-duty police officer walked into the wrong apartment and thought he was an intruder so she shot him, and Philando Castile, who was pulled over for a traffic stop, told the officer he had a legal firearm, and was shot with his girlfriend and four-year-old daughter sitting in the car, and many more.  “Mama stop crying cause I don’t want you to get shooted,” is what Philando’s daughter told her mom.

Jacob Blake was handcuffed to his own hospital bed, even though he’s paralyzed from the waist down. Jacob Blake Sr. wanted to talk to the president after the incident, but the president said, “They wanted their lawyer on the line, and I thought that was inappropriate.” He went on to say that he talked to the family’s pastor, and Jacob Blake Sr. responded, “We don’t have a family pastor,” and “I’m not playing politics with my son’s life.” New protests erupt against police violence after more and more incidents like this happen.
