The Met Gala

The+Met+Gala

The Met Gala is an annual gala, hosted by Vogue in New York City, that raises funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Institute and its Costume Institute program. Each year, the top movie stars, musical talents, models and other influential individuals are invited to show off their best looks, which must abide by a theme. Some past themes that have been visited include “Camp: Notes on Fashion” (2019),  and “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” (2008). This year, we celebrated “In America: Lexicon of Fashion,” and the event was surely star-studded. Hosted by Timothee Chalamet, Amanda Gorman, Naomi Osaka, and Billie Eilish, the expectations were high, but they were definitely met (if not exceeded).  Some looks, however, stood out among the others for pioneering a new stride in fashion that had not been yet seen. Let’s take a closer look at three particular celebrities that stood out.

  1. Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X’s career has skyrocketed within the past few years, with releases of some of his hit songs such as Old Town Road and Montero (Call Me By Your Name), among others. Has become an icon for the LGBTQ+ community over the course of his career and he was ready to blow everyone away at his first Met Gala. Lil Nas X had stunned us with his dazzling looks before, but nothing quite like this. He appeared in three different gold looks, all designed by Versace. The first was a large gold cape-type situation. I’m not really sure what to call it, but it was definitely dazzling. He then revealed his next article, hidden under the cape, which was a purely gold suit of armor. These two looks alone were enough to leave fans content, but he did not stop there. His last look was a bedazzled gold bodysuit, which was intricately designed, and left Lil Nas X shining like the star he is. This was definitely a great way to kick off his Met Gala debut, and creates great anticipation for the next look we may get to see.

2.  Barbie Ferreira

Barbie Ferreira is most widely known for her role as Kat on the hit HBO series, Euphoria. Barbie’s was definitely my favorite out of any look on last night’s carpet. She showed up in a beautiful dress designed by Jonathan Simkhai. Its bodice was a tight, corset-like fit, with draping off the shoulder sleeves. The entire dress was composed of strings of pearls and crystals, which fell into a flowing skirt of the same material. Barbie looked unbelievably glamorous, and left jaws on the floor. An unforgettable first impression for the young star’s first Met.

3. Iman

Iman is a Somalian model and actress, and owner of her own cosmetic line. Iman’s look surprised everyone at the gala, and she made a strong and elegant choice. She wore a gold snakeskin jumpsuit, complete with a headdress and a hoop skirt, both made out of golden furry material. In the right lighting, her look glowed and shimmered, dazzling all who looked at it. Iman did not come to mess around and she completely understood the assignment at hand.

This year’s Met Gala had high expectations, after being cancelled last year, and we were ready for double the fun, glamour, and excitement. The celebrities invited did not fail to impress, and it could not have turned out any better.
