Why and when did Christmas start? Christmas is a holiday celebrated most everywhere. When Christmas first started it was called Saturnalia and Christmas first started because it was thought to have derived from Roman and other European festivals that marked the end of the harvest and the winter solstice. When people get asked “What’s the real reason we have Christmas” they would say it’s to remember Jesus, because Christmas is his birthday. If they are right then Jesus’s birthday is on December 25th every year.
