Mitski Miyawaki was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to the United States at a young age. Growing up in a multicultural environment, she developed a strong appreciation for different music genres. Mitski began playing piano at an early age and later picked up the guitar, showcasing her passion for music from the start. Mitski’s musical journey began to take shape during her college years. She released her first two albums, “Lush” and “Retired from Sad, New Career in Business,” while studying at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. These albums reflected Mitski’s early exploration of her musical style, blending elements of indie rock, folk, and punk. It was her breakthrough album, “Bury Me at Makeout Creek,” released in 2013, that gained Mitski widespread recognition. The album showcased her raw and emotional songwriting, addressing themes of love, identity, and the challenges of young adulthood. Mitski’s distinctive voice and compelling lyrics resonated with many listeners, earning her critical acclaim.
