Duendes are mythical creatures that originate from Latin America, Spain, Europe, and the Philippines. Duendes can be explained as similar to a goblin, elf, or an Irish leprechaun. It is said that they reside in dark caves, old trees and anthills. They usually allow themselves to be seen by children and in some cases adults. The story I’m about to tell you happened to my aunt when she was 10 years old and her sister who was a bit younger than her.
My aunt grew up hearing that the duendes would “mark” you in your sleep and after a few nights of this, they would lure you away until you get lost. One afternoon, she was playing outside with her sister near a ditch. All of a sudden, they heard voices calling out to them. When they turned they saw two little creatures in the ditch, gnome-like in size, but with deformed, devilish faces. The creatures quickly ran off into the trees. Her sister wanted to go after them, but my aunt stopped her. They rushed home and told their mother what they had seen. Their mother explained that what they saw were duendes, and their intent was to take them away. After that, she forbade my aunt and her sister to ever play outside after dark.
