The word doppelgänger is German and literally means “double walker” or “double goer.” Seeing someone else’s doppelgänger has been considered to be an omen of misfortune or bad luck, and if you see your own it’s a sign of impending death.
Their are many stories of historical figures encountering their doppelgängers. One of the most famous sightings was of Abraham Lincoln looking into a mirror the night of his first election. When he looked at the mirror he saw two reflections, one was him as he was, but the second reflection was pale and sickly. His wife, Mary, interpreted the encounter as a sign of death or sickness, and that he would not see out to his second term.
Another popular story happened to Catherine the Great, Russia’s famous Empress. Her servants claimed to have seen her doppelgänger sitting on her throne while she was asleep. Upon seeing her double, Catherine ordered her servants to shoot at the imposter, the bullets seemingly had no effect on the being. Catherine died from a stroke a few weeks later.
The story I’m about to tell you happened to Mason 4 years ago, in late December of 2020…
I was 19 around this time, me and my girlfriend were at my grandparents place hanging out in the garage, we decided to head inside since it was getting too cold. It was around 2 AM, she headed into my room and I went into the kitchen to cook something for us in the oven. I was standing alone in the kitchen when my grandma and girlfriend walked out into the kitchen together. I found it bit strange because my grandma never stays up late and even more strange on how they walked in unison.
The first thing my grandma said to me was, “don’t go back out there tonight, people lose their lives on nights like this.” I was a bit freaked out on why she would say that, they just stood there staring at me with the weirdest expression I’d ever seen. My girlfriend then walked over to me and gave me a hug. When I touched her she was freezing cold, I commented on this and her expression changed from a deranged smile to a serious face with sad eyes. I noticed that she smelt like a campfire, an earthy smokey smell. My girlfriend whispered in my ear, “don’t go outside tonight.”
She walked back over to my grandma. She stood beside her with her head down while my grandma was still staring at me with that weird smile. The wind began to howl outside. My grandma turned and looked at my girlfriend, “don’t mess with black magic” she said, “Nothing good is gonna come from it.” My girlfriend continued looking down. “We have to go now,” she said. They both started walking away. My grandma looked back at me for a second. “See you on the flip side” she said with that weird smile. I got chill through my whole body when she said that. They turned to corner and left the kitchen.
I stayed out in the kitchen for another ten minutes until the food was done. I went back into my room, my girlfriend sat up on my bed and put on a movie. I guess I was quiet because she asked me “what’s wrong?” I turned to her and asked why her and my grandma came out to the kitchen. The second I said that my nose started bleeding. I ran to the bathroom and got something to stop the bleeding. When I went back in the room I told my girlfriend everything. As you can guess she said she never went out the the kitchen and she swore on her life she was in the room the whole time. She didn’t smell like smoke anymore. We went and woke up my grandma and she said the same thing. my grandma thought we were trying to mess with her and she didn’t believe me. We were so freaked out after this we had trouble sleeping for the rest of the night.
The part that really messed my girlfriend up was when I told her about how cold she felt and how she smelt like smoke. The only explanation we could come up with was that maybe if I went outside that night something bad would’ve happened to me. The last part of it that made sense was about the black magic. My girlfriend just got a book about witchcraft from her friend the week prior. She took what was said as a warning and never opened the book again. To this day I still get chills thinking about it. Especially the last thing said. “See you on the flip side…”
