In the past few weeks it seems that the Monkeypox virus has appeared out of nowhere and is rapidly spreading, as Monkeypox cases have been rising around the world. On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries in Africa, Monkeypox cases have been on a quick uprise, as cases have been consistently appearing. And as cases rise it seems to be that it is spreading across other countries, not just African countries. Countries like Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, just to name a few, have all confirmed cases of Monkeypox. In addition to this new outbreak, the World Health Organization continues to receive updates on the status of ongoing reports of Monkeypox cases through established surveillance mechanisms for cases in endemic countries. The name Monkeypox originates from the initial discovery of the virus in monkeys in a Danish laboratory in 1958. The Monkeypox virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials.
