Plumerias symbolize love, birth, spring, and new beginnings. The flowers are tropical native to the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America. It’s also the national flower of Nicaragua and Laos. They were named after a French botanist, Charles Plumier and can grow as shrubs or small trees. It’s rare but some of the trees can grow up to 30ft tall! They usually bloom from fall to early spring in cool weather and have many vibrant colors. Their petals are thick and smooth to the touch. It’s common to have plumerias as house plants but they have to be in cold conditions to thrive. The flowers don’t have nectar but do have poisonous sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. In some places like Australia, plumerias are also known as “frangipani.” In many Asian countries and Hawaii the flowers are placed in cemeteries, on leis, and in temples which is why the flower is also known as the “Temple Tree.” In Hawaiin tradition women will wear a plumeria behind their left ear to show that they’re taken and behind the right to show they’re single. These are my favorite flowers so I hope you enjoyed learning about them as much as I did;)
