El Salvador is a small country located in central America. My family is from there and I have visited a couple times so I feel that I have a say in some of the best food in their country. I happen to be a very picky eater but this food has never failed me and it is very tasty.
One of my favorite meals from El Salvador that my grandma makes a lot are pupusas. Pupusas are made of flour and have many different fillings like beans and cheese, pork and cheese, or cheese with chilies. There is a larger variety but because I’m very picky, that’s what my grandma usually makes for me. Every time I visit El Salvador, I see a pupusa stand or restaurant on every corner because it happens to be a local favorite as well.
My favorite dessert from El Salvador are torejas. They are extremely similar to French toast and the process to prepare the bread is the same, but instead of eating it with fruit or syrup, you make your own syrup that the torejas lie in. The syrup is made with brown sugar and egg whites, and you then pour it onto the torejas so they can absorb the syrup.
My last favorite food from El Salvador is pan con pavo. Pan con pavo translates to bread with turkey and its exactly what it sounds like, but it looks a lot more appetizing than it sounds. It is made with a thick bread called a bollio, and the key to having a delicious pan con pavo is making the sauce that you add onto it when you are ready to eat. Along with the sauce, there are many toppings added like lettuce, onions, radish, cucumber, or you can eat it plain.
Salvadoran food may not be for everyone, but these are three simple local foods in El Salvador that even picky people can enjoy. I did not list too many, but the list of great food in El Salvador goes on.
