Saipan is the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands (U.S. commonwealth) located in the western Pacific Ocean. Saipan is surrounded by glistening clear water with their beautiful sandy beaches. Popular activities include snorkeling in the Grotto, watching the birds on Bird Island, hiking on Mount Tapochau, windsurfing and kitesurfing at Micro Beach, walking around the American Memorial Park, golfing at the resorts, and visiting historical sites from the Battle of Saipan. Chamorros and Carolinians make up most of the population along with Asian ethnicities and other races.
Saipan was originally founded by Austronesian settlers around 1500 BC who later evolved into Chamorro people. In 1565, a Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, claimed Saipan and it continued to be under Spanish sovereignty until 1899. Spain sold the island to Germany and they had control from 1899 to 1914. In 1914, Japan overtook all of the Northern Mariana Islands and were very strict in their way of showing authority by putting their language as the primary base of education. The Japanese took Guam from the U.S. to maintain complete control over the Marianas. According to history.com, during the Pacific Campaign of World War II, U.S. Marines invaded Saipan on June 15th in 1944 with the objective of using the island as an air base because of its close distance with Japan so they could attack them easier. The Battle of Saipan resulted in the U.S.’s victory making the Northern Mariana Islands a commonwealth of the U.S.
