Girls' Golf

Thursday September 26th, I joined the girl’s golf team on a trip to the Canyon Lake Country Club (golf field) to watch them play against TC.

Here’s a rundown of what happened:

For away games you board the district vans, a 9 seater with extra space in the back. You write your name on the passenger list, put on your seat belt, and Coach Hickok or Coach Wheelock will drive us to the destination.

Once on the golf course, you will warm-up, as I saw many girls swung their golf clubs with no heads, creating a satisfying woosh. Then they warmed up with the practice field, using golf balls provided at this establishment.

There are 7 girls on the team, but 6 were split into 3 groups. A pair of Elsinore girls would go with another pair of the TC girls, to make the plays faster and so we weren’t actively hogging the rest of the course, because there were other players after all.

Once the first 4 players went, they would move to the next hole, and the next group would go, so on and so forth. At the start of our first round, we quickly realized golf is a silent sport. Not a sound should be made, for you could distract the player. As I walked around, I held my breath, afraid that if I even sneezed I would cost us the hit. Only after the golfer has hit the ball and it has touched the ground could you say, “Good shot.” And move on.

On my expedition, I was blessed to be with Roxanna and Issac from photography, and we separated at the start, but joined together halfway for ice cream, and separated again. They were a fun addition to my originally planned solo mission, and I’m glad it turned into a trio job.

Each girl had a three wheeled case carrier for their golf clubs, tees, water bottles, cellphones, and golf balls. They walked what was a little over a mile to follow through the whole course, going over hills, through mud, and ants. We followed in golf carts which Coach Wheelock provided originally for the photographers, but I stole Issac’s spot.

Roxanna drove us around, very excited to do so, grinning from ear to ear every time we could drive alongside the golf team.

The establishment provided a water fountain with ice, tees in the carts, and four cup holders despite the golf carts being two-seaters.

I noticed that once reaching the light green patch of grass, when everyone has reached it, they remove the flag. I was told it was because it was easier to putt the golf ball in, because it becomes an obstruction in the golfer’s way. Which is true, because the hole is small and the flag is huge.

Tees were also placed in front of the ball before being removed when in the light green patch of grass, to not bump into the opponent’s ball or be in the way. Brands and numbers of golf balls were shared before the start, to make everyone aware what their ball looked like and shouldn’t be hit on mistake as most everyone had a white golf ball.

They were hos

pitable with us, cared for us as if we were part of the team, and were glad to have us there. 10/10, would definitely recommend!

Any questions, comments, concerns can be directed to Rachelle Wheelock of the girls golf team! She is more than happy to talk your ear off about how great everyone is (which is true!) and to have you on her team!
