According to ABC7 News, Costco recalled about 80,000 pounds of butter due to the missing label that indicates milk as an ingredient. The products include Kirkland Signature unsalted sweet cream butter and Kirkland Signature salted sweet cream butter. Although cream was listed as an ingredient, the butter was still recalled for the absence of the milk label. There are currently no reports of allergic reactions. The butter was initially recalled on October 11th but was classified on November 7th by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Reason.com states that the FDA classified the recall as Class II which means it is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” All of the butter is going off the shelves and into waste with the most affected Costco stores being in Texas. People are expressing their opinions by describing the situation as “ridiculous” and saying that the FDA thinks others are “dumb” or “stupid” for not knowing that butter contains milk. It’s not really about the FDA thinking people are too unknowledgeable, it’s more about them missing a key ingredient label so I think putting the blame on others is a bit unethical.
