Chelsea is one of the biggest teams in the world, but in the last years they have been the odd one out especially in the English Premier League Top 6, which includes 6 teams that constantly win the top 6 positions in the league. They include Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, both Man. City & Man. United, with Tottenham as well, with the questionable decisions with managers and making extravagant transfers on players who would have never gone for much. On the field is not even the first problem as American owner Todd Boehly and owners Clearlake are on non-speaking terms making decisions that are completely independent of each other. This is due to both parties making bids to buy each other out of majority ownership.
The problems are transfers and team management- in the 22/23 season Chelsea bought several players for over 50 million euro. The biggest transfer of the year also went to them, 121 million euros for the Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, a player who was immediately under scrutiny for his enormous price tag but as of recently he has been the captain they’ve needed and paid for. So far he is the future for his club and country. But as we’ll see this pressure for price tag is a recurring theme. Enter Wesley Fofana, who went for 80 million euros and was once again under scrutiny for his price tag and is under performing overall as he is injured and isn’t really the first option for center back with Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill starting. Mykhailo Mudryk is a 70 million euro transfer who has been sidelined due to injury and has done close to nothing with his playing time due to pressure of his price tag and hasn’t been able to show us his talent. Chelsea also had key departures with Jorginho a former 3rd place to win the ballon d’or. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both left on free transfers, a key staple in their defense. N’golo Kante also left a world class midfielder known for his hard work and grit in the middle of the field, he left on a free transfer.
