I want to read at least one book every month for this year, and for January I have chosen to read both The Rainbow by Yasunari Kawabata and My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.
I have read The Rainbow first. I think the book is simple, with having a lot of flowery scenes and describing the way architecture of Japan used to be before WWII. The story follows a family of two sisters, as they both grieve after the losses of both of their mothers, and how they are coping with the tragedies. The older sister is obsessed with reconnecting in new relationships, to distract her, while the younger sister spends her life trying to find their third ‘missing’ sister. I like how this book is a metaphor for how the people of Japan moved on after the war, with having their traditional buildings weak and deteriorating, while making space for newer technologies, like cars.
I have not read My Brilliant Friend yet, but it is the first book in a quartet, so if I enjoy reading the first one then I will finish it and write a review then. [yay] !!
