Ramen is popular dish in Japan typically made with egg noodles, broth, and various toppings, but what is its history? The origins of this dish come from 19th Century China. The first known mention of ramen in Japan was in 1859, when the Chinese ambassador at the time presented it to the Japanese Emperor. Ramen became a staple food in Japan by the early 20th century. During World War II, ramen became a popular and cheap meal for soldiers and civilians. After World War II, instant ramen noodles were introduced. New types of ramen, such as tonkotsu (pork bone) and miso ramen, were introduced in the 1960s.
