Stardew Valley is a slice of life, cozy game (for veterans of the game it’s easy, but newcomers struggle), that allows to you to get to know 8 bachelors/ettes to date or marry, including side characters to learn more about and a demon who can be your roommate.
This game is available on Nintendo Switch, PCs, mobile, Playstation and Xbox. The 1.6 update has recently made its way to Switch and PC after months of waiting, expanding the games dialogue and adding several more crops to plant.
The creator of Stardew Valley, ConcernedApe, regularly posts on his social media, asking loyal players what they’d like to see in the game. The recent poll had added mango trees, and one roughly 3 years ago had brought in Shane to be a bachelor (marriage option).
One of the many characters you are able to marry is Haley. She is a blonde, preppy character who calls you ugly in your first interaction, and will continue to degrade you for dressing the way you do or if you gift her something she doesn’t like. What a woman.
As you level up her friendship, she becomes much kinder, showing you a side of herself that loves the valley, and you. Regardless of what gender you play as, you can date whichever character you want, but most commonly, girls marry Haley, and boys marry Alex (whom I loathe with a burning passion.) No one in the valley will judge you, and encourage you to follow through with your romancing.
I have reached a point in the game where I have my house upgraded, and available for Haley to move in with me. I have given her a mermaid pendant, the game’s version of a ring, and have proposed to her. It takes 3 days to get married in the game, then the character you have married moves in with you. It may be days or weeks before a message pops up, “Y/N? Do you want a kid?”
And BAM, if it’s a same sex relationship, your spouse will say they will call up the adoption agency and get things sorted out, where you will receive a baby in a week. If it’s of opposite sex, the spouse will simply smile and it is assumed you get busy.
The spouse has their own room in your home, and they will randomly place decorations down and ask you what you think, routinely change the wallpaper for certain rooms, and return to bed with you at 9pm.
My last Stardew Valley divorce was because my spouse never came home. And when I did go looking for her, she was in Sam’s house. I bombed his house (which didn’t damage anything, unfortunately), and filed for divorce the next morning. Spouses do not actually cheat in the game, I assume she lagged, but it happened frequently and it made me very sad.
Here’s to hoping that Haley doesn’t lag, and awaits for me at home every night.
