Valentine’s Day is holiday that is both loved and hated by many people but what is the history of this holiday? Valentine’s Day was named after Saint Valentine who was executed by Roman Emperor Claudius II on February 14th and who may have been a priest who secretly married young lovers, which went against the emperor’s wishes. The holiday may also have roots in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia. Cupid is associated with Valentine’s Day because he is the Greek God of Love with Roman art. Cupid is often depicted as a winged, child-like figure who represents pure love so Victorians began depicting Cupid on Valentine’s Day cards, a tradition that continues today.
