This history of the telephone chronicles the development of the electrical telephone, and includes a brief overview of its predecessors. The first telephone patent was granted to Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. In 1874 Alexander Graham Bell discovers the principle of the telephone. He experiments with Thomas Watson to create the first telephone connection. The first commercially available handheld cellular mobile phone was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, introduced in 1983.
