The Ouija Board was created in the late 1800s and was advertised as, “the wonderful talking board,” a new paranormal product. The Ouija Board was a flat wooden board with the letters of the alphabet arranged in two semicircles above the numbers zero through nine. The words “yes” and “no” appear in the uppermost corners, while “goodbye” is printed at the bottom. The board also comes with a “planchette,” a teardrop-shaped device, with a small window in the body, used to maneuver about the board.
The idea was that two or more people would sit around the board and place their fingertips on the planchette. They would ask a question and watch as the planchette moved from letter to letter, spelling out the answers. It was believed that the board could communicate with spirits and those who were mourning a loss used the board to cope.
The board got a bad twisted name when spiritualists labeled it as demonic, when conversations with the board turned more scary than comforting. The Ouija board has been debunked by psychologists, they call it ‘zombie mind’ as it reveals other fascinating things about the human psyche and behavior.
