In 1984, the story takes place in a world where the government, led by a figure called Big Brother, controls everything. The main character, Winston Smith, lives in a society where everyone is always watched, and the government controls what people think and say. Winston works for the government, rewriting history to fit the party’s needs, but he secretly hates Big Brother and dreams of rebelling. He meets a woman named Julia, and they start a secret relationship, hoping to escape the government’s control. They eventually get caught by the Thought Police, and Winston is tortured until he betrays Julia and becomes loyal to Big Brother. The book shows how dangerous totalitarian governments can be and how they take away personal freedom. In the end, Winston is broken and completely loyal to Big Brother, showing how power can destroy a person’s will.
