The giant panda, a symbol of conservation, has a rich history spanning millions of years, with fossil evidence indicating their existence as far back as 2 million years. Pandas have large molar teeth and expanded temporal fossa to meet its dietary requirements. It can digest starch and is mostly herbivorous with a diet consisting almost entirely of bamboo and bamboo shoots. On Dec. 6, 2000, giant pandas Mei Xiang (female) and Tian Tian (male) came to live at the National Zoo.
