Anneliese was born in Germany 1952. She was raised as a strict Catholic and was described as a bright girl. In September 1968, at 16 years old, Anneliese experienced her first episode of losing consciousness and later in the night she felt like something was pressing down on her chest, pinning her to her bed. A year later, she experienced the same thing, so her mother took Anneliese to the doctor where they found nothing wrong and tried brushing it off as a type of seizure.
Over the next three years, Anneliese continued to have these episodes and was prescribed multiple medications.
In Spring 1973, Anneliese and her family began hearing knocking sounds coming from Anneliese’s bedroom, and Anneliese reported hearing a voice damning her to hell. Her mother was terrified when she witnessed Anneliese furiously staring at a statue of the Virgin Mary with “eyes turned black.”
In September 1973, Anneliese told her doctor that she can see demonic faces tormenting her and felt like the devil was inside her. She was diagnosed as neurotic with epilepsy and was prescribed Tegretol, a much stronger drug.
In July 1975, her behavior worsened, as she barely slept and prayed intensely all night. She ate spiders and flies and even licked her own urine from the floor. She would destroy rosaries, crucifixes, and holy pictures on the walls. Anneliese began to exhibit superhuman strength like throwing things across the room as if she were a ragdoll, crushing an apple with one hand, and overpowering those who tried to restrain her. A priest was convinced Anneliese was possessed and after speaking with the bishop, an exorcism was formally approved.
On September 24, 1975, the first exorcism was performed and a total of 42 audio recordings were made. Anneliese named one of her demons as Fleischmann, who was a priest in the 1500s who was kicked out of the church for bad behavior. Anneliese provided accurate details about the real Fleischmann, which shocked Father Alt who claims Anneliese would have no way of knowing the banished priest.
By May 1976, Anneliese became worse; she would banging her head on the walls and bite herself and others. To prevent her from further harming herself, he family kept her tied up. What was most concerning is Anneliese’s weight of 66 pounds and her refusal to eat as she stated she was, “not permitted to eat.”
On June 30th, Anneliese had her last exorcism, only saying, “Please, absolution.” The next morning she was found in her room dead. She had died of starvation at the age of 23, after 67 exorcisms.
