I feel like I underestimated the fact that with sports injuries, it’s not if it happens, it’s when it happens. The immediate feeling I had when I broke my leg while doing the sport that I am passionate about was confusion. It went from not knowing what fully happened to my leg to realization. The realization caused many feelings of fear, worry, stress, sadness, and panic to spiral. I was so caught up in the moment of the fact that I broke my leg that I didn’t stop to think if everything would get better. As I’m two and a half months into my recovery process, I’m here to tell you that things do eventually get better with time. My tibia is practically healed, and I will be able to put weight on my leg next week. After having a splint for a week, a cast for 5 weeks, and a brace for 5 weeks and counting, I really learned the concept of patience after being told “just 1 more week” so many times. Also, recovery is not going to be easy mentally or physically. In a way, it’s your choice if you want to get better or not because it’s all mental. You have the ability to choose if you want to do your physical therapy exercises everyday and have a optimistic mindset for your recovery. My advice for anyone that is currently recovering from a sports injury is to not dwell on the past and to look forward because that is the main way you are going to get better. If you focus on the fact that you will be missing out on your season and if you wonder if you could’ve done something differently to prevent the injury, the only direction your going is backwards. Instead of worrying about what already happened, focus on your next physical therapy or doctor appointment and don’t see your recovery process as a long, complicated time (even though resting for hours on end is extremely boring, especially as an active and athletic person) but as an opportunity to grow.
