Jamestown was founded on May 14,1607, by the Virginia Company, which was chartered by King James I. Jamestown was located on a peninsula of the James River in what is now Virginia. Jamestown was the first successful permanent English settlement in North America. It served as the capital of the Virginia colony for over 80 years, until 1699 when the capital moved to Williamsburg. John Smith, a prominent figure, played a key role in the settlement’s early years, including his relationships with Native Americans. John Rolfe’s introduction of tobacco farming in 1612 made Jamestown economically viable. Jamestown is credited with establishing the first representative government in America.
