Pusheen the cat is a tubby tabby cartoon cat who brings smiles and laughter to people all around the world. She was created by Clarie Belton and Andrew Duff on June 29, 2010, for their webcomic that was called “Everyday Cute.” Pusheen was inspired by Belton’s real life childhood cat, who named her the Irish name “Pusheen” after adopting her from the shelter.
Pusheen got popular because of her relatable, simple design that embodies internet culture, particularly the concept of kawaii cuteness. She also got popular through her animated comics and GIFs posted on Pusheen.com.
In 2013, a comic compilation titled “I am Pusheen the Cat” was published by Simon and Schuster, which then was translated into more than 12 languages. In the same year, Facebook’s “chat sticker” launched, which licensed Pusheen images then were made available as emoji-style graphics to over one billion users.
Pusheen quickly spread across the internet, and this led to a global merchandising empire of plush toys and accessories, along with collaborations with major brands, solidifying Pusheen as a beloved and unifying pop culture icon.
