As the day goes by, my heart races, and my cheeks flush at the memory of Harris watching me earlier. Honestly never thought he’d even notice me until today. Walking to the communal showers I bump into Lawrence. She gives me a warm smile as she joins me. We both take a shower next to each other, clearly enjoying the warm water. We both finish at the same time and head back to the barracks once we get dressed. It doesn’t take us long to get there. But unfortunately we have to go our separate ways since her room across the hall and mine is at the beginning. “Goodnight,” she said in her usual soft voice, although her voice can be loud and proud when needed. That’s only on rare occasions, or if someone annoys her. “Goodnight” I say with a smile.
With that we go to our rooms. Sighing with relief once I’m under my soft and warm blankets, I curl up against them trying to not think about today. The softness of the blankets are extremely comforting and helps me relax. I begin to giggle ever so slightly at the embarrassing day I’ve had and at the blankets.
The morning I wake up is the morning that I dread. It’s fitness day. Which I don’t entirely mind, however don’t exactly like to show off with my running skills. It was bad enough that a majority of the other airmen already saw me on the treadmill. Ignoring the thought, I just get dressed and ignore my thoughts. I quickly get to the drill-pad for attendance. Almost everyone is there already. Not so sure if the others that aren’t here are going to be on time. It’s going to suck if they aren’t here on time. I personally don’t feel like doing push-ups. A few minutes later the airmen eventually came on time. So no push-ups today. Just running. Our PT (Physical Training) sergeant leads us into stretching. All of us groan except for Lawrence. She’s a stretching queen. She used to do a bunch of yoga before she joined the military.
We all line up at the track and when the whistle blows we start running. not full speed but just enough to give the PT Sargent satisfaction. The first lap I already see a lot of men struggling. Mainly because they train for muscle, not speed and stamina. I manage to keep a steady pace. Not going too far ahead but not staying too far back. By the time we get to lap two everyone is almost already dying and losing stamina. Unfortunately for me, the only ones that still have energy are me, Lawrence, Thomas, and Harris. Me and Lawrence are aligned and perfectly in sync with our steps. On the fourth lap Lawrence and Thomas are slowing down and behind with the others. Now it’s just me and Harris aligned and in sync. Honestly, I had no idea he was aligned with me until he speaks. “Not going to go full speed this time?” I swear he says that with a smirk and chuckle. I glance at him and unexpectedly, he’s already looking at me with a beautiful smile.
