The JAS-39 is extremely capable in close air support (CAS), air to air combat, and electronical warfare. It originates from Sweden and operates in Sweden, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, and Thailand, as well as the United Kingdom as a trainer jet. This jet entered into the Swedish Air Force in 1997 and it is still in use to this day. The Gripen focuses on multirole combat instead of stealth, unlike most advanced countries’ aircraft. This makes it an extremely versatile platform capable of many different missions. The Gripen has a max speed of Mach 2 (1,480 MPH) with a single Volvo Aero RM12 engine. It has a max altitude of 50,000 feet and a combat radius of 500 miles. The Gripen is a delta wing aircraft with canards, and it is 46 feet 3 inches long, has a wingspan of 27 feet 7 inches and sits at 15 feet 5 inches tall. The Gripen has a 27mm Mauser BK-27 cannon and can carry up to 7,942 pounds of external ordnance across six hardpoints. The other 4 hard points are reserved for air to air missiles. The delta wing with canards makes this aircraft extremely maneuverable especially at lower speeds. One random cool fact is that the JAS-39 Gripen was designed to and is capable of taking off, or landing on, extremely short or even damaged runways. It can even take off of most city streets, given enough clearance is available.
PS. I couldn’t find an image I could use of a Gripen taking off a street but I would highly recommend looking it up it is extremely cool.
