My Melody is one of Sanrio’s characters created by Yasuko Matsumoto, the same designer who had created the Little Twin Stars (also characters from Sanrio!). They designed and launched My Melody in 1975 as part of a Christmas promotion. My Melody was originally meant to be a rabbit-like version of Little Red Riding Hood from the popular children’s fairytale. With this, her hood was originally red but Sanrio changed it to pink.  The original red hood is now worn by her cousin, Littleforestfellow.

Created in 1975, My Melody is one of Sanrio’s oldest original characters, only preceded by Little Twin Stars (1975), Hello Kitty (1974), and Coro Chan (1973). In 2019, My Melody turned out to be one of Sanrio’s most successful characters. In the 2023 Sanrio Character Ranking, she came in 5th place right after Hello Kitty.

My Melody is the star of her own fictional world known as Mariland, along with her arch-rival turned friend, Kuromi. She is also Hello Kitty’s best friend, and both characters have interacted in multiple media over the years. In the Sanrio world, My Melody shows up in a lot of TV shows, web series, video games, and a bunch of merch.

My Melody’s cute and friendly personality showcases on of the brighter aspects of the Sanrioverse. With charm, grace, and unconditional love, My Melody had a massive impact on fans worldwide.
