By the time I reach the second lap I’m leaning on my knees breathing somewhat heavily. I can feel his presence behind me up. I slowly turn around and look up. He’s looking down and smiling at me. He’s so tall that he’s blocking the sun from my view. “Looks Like I won’t be seeing you tomorrow, Airman Moore.” He smirks and walks away.
When we get back I immediately go to the showers. The warm water relaxes my tense muscles. I get back into my uniform when I get out. I look at the time on my watch and see it’s time for lunch. I start walking there when I hear someone talking around the corner. I don’t recognize it but I stay hidden.
“I swear he only got that position because his dad was in here. He didn’t earn that himself. It was given to him by daddy,” one of them says. I look at their rank– both Airman basics.
“I don’t know man, he could genuinely have earned his Captain position himself. You never know.” My eyes narrow. I already know who they’re talking about. I silently step far back and make my foot prints louder, for them to hear. I hear them shuffle and immediately change subject. I come into their view. “I’d get to lunch before they make us do some exercise to eat.” They look at me like i just told them to clean the sewer. They go anyway and I follow. I get my own plate and soon Lawrence joins me. We go to a table and manage to be able to sit next together as the other airmen are eating and talking. Some eating sloppier than the others, getting it all over their uniform. It seems me and Lawrence are the only ones who know how to eat properly.
By the time we finish we have some free time before our meeting for our next missions. Well mine at least. “I’m gonna go to the gym room,” Lawrence says with a smile. “You wanna come?” I probably should but I’m tired from running more than I should’ve earlier. “No. Maybe another time?” I say with a reassuring smile. She nods and walks away after putting her plate away. With a sigh I put my plate away as well and decide to go for a walk around the base. I was expected to be alone but then I hear my name being called. “Moore!” Harris calls.
I stop and turn around. He’s jogging up to me. “Mind if I join?” I shrug and we walk together. “You did good today,” he says softly. “You too,” I manage to say before it becomes awkward. I forgot my blouse in my dorm and a decent breeze begins to blow causing me to shiver. I wrap my arms around myself. I hear Harris chuckle before wrapping his jacket over me. I look up at him and I see his eyes.. Sparkle?
