The Sherman tanks were mainly used by allied forces during WWII and were extremely successful against German, Italian, and Japanese targets. The first Sherman was the M4A1 which started production in 1942. It was first used in North Africa by the British Army and later that year in the same place by the Americans. It also saw extensive use in WWII specifically against German Panzer III’s and Panzer IV’s. While the Shermans were equally matched with the German Panzers it was a different story when it came to the German Tigers and Panthers. Both the Panthers and Tigers were superior to the Shermans in firepower and armor. Even though the German tanks were better they were more expensive, less reliable, and harder to maintain. The Shermans on the other hand were cheap, reliable, and easy to maintain. At one point in time the US was producing 66 Shermans daily while the Germans were only producing about 8 tanks a day. The American war time production allowed the US to outnumber the Germans as well as outlast their resources. The Shermans used numbers and superior logistics to win fights instead of power and armor. The Shermans had access to a wider variety of rounds including smoke, armor piercing, high explosive, armor piercing composite, and armor piercing explosive. While the Germans only used armor piercing explosive and high explosive, all of these attributes helped the Allies win WWII and remove the Nazis from power in Germany.
