In the book The Catcher In The Rye by J.D Salinger it follows a 17 year old teenager named Holden Caulfield who feels out of place in society since he deems society as filled with phonies and he sees himself to have a lack of purpose in life since he got kicked out of his prep school Pencey Prep due to failing four out of his five classes. Throughout the story he makes very poor actions such as provoking his friend Stradlater into fighting him since Stradlater is going on a date with a girl Holden likes, and Holden travels to New York City just to wander around but he loses his innocence by trying to get with prostitutes and never ends up with any of them. After all those unfortunate events he meets up with his younger sister, both of them go into a fair, and Holden sees how happy she is unlike him and devotes himself to be a catcher in the rye and protect other kids’ innocence since he lost his own, but by the end of the story the ending is not a very happy one since he ends up in a mental hospital missing all the people he encountered in life.
