Less Restrictions, More Teachers

There is no hiding that a teacher shortage has devastated many school districts across America, because of a few reasons including, but not limited to, lower wages, bigger classes, and the daunting workload of teaching hundreds of kids everyday. So in order to combat this issue, some administrators have begun lowering the bar needed to employ teachers, such as lessening the amount of education needed and hiring teachers for spots they aren’t fit for, like a science teacher filling in for a history class. While this may seem like a good fix to get teachers in classes and keep students learning, this may be far from the proper solution. The standards that teachers are required to fulfill were put there for a reason, to not only be a mentor to students but to keep those students in a safe learning environment. Giving people a job as a teacher just because they met the bare minimum requirements doesn’t make them a good teacher, it just further increases the problem since those teachers are likely to quit sooner than actual teachers fit for the job, which would bring us back to square one. Of course the easiest solution would be to adhere to the demands of the teachers that constantly strike outside of their schools for better conditions. But so far, there has been a lack of progress to keep qualified teachers in schools.
