(Spoilers are Imminent! Be warned!)
Obsession is a psychological horror film that follows Bear, a music store employee who buys a supernatural item titled a One Wish Willow that grants him the singular wish of his childhood friend, Nikki, to fall in love with him. This however causes horrifying consequences that happens all throughout.
I am not much of a horror fan myself. Usually, I’d tune into my favorite horror film explainer, Kill Count, but for some reason I felt the biggest urge to see this movie in theaters. Because of that, I have a bunch of things to say about it. Quick spoiler: It’s amazing.
After the One Wish Willow was granted, Nikki had became very quickly clingy to bear, acting completely different to how she normally would to her friend. She came up with nonsensical lies, duct taped the door to its frame, even cooking Bear’s dead cat that was shown earlier in the movie. It was as if she was dependent on him; and she was. Her autonomy was stripped completely from him, only being someone made specifically for Bear.
Bear.. oh Bear. It could be assumed that he was the victim in this situation, having to deal with so many tragedies, but NO. Nikki, the one who was forced unwillingly into this situation, had her entire life away. She pleaded silently to Bear, the only way for her to become herself again was either of their deaths. Yet he only questioned how hard it was for her to love her. He’s obsessed of the idea of her and what she could be to him, but not who she truly is.
In the end, Nikki’s entity had gone completely insane, killing the two best friends that worked alongside them. Bear had decided to end his life, as he couldn’t bare her anymore, and chose the easiest and only way out: death. He swallowed pills called oxycodone, and almost went out before chickening and attempting to vomit. It didn’t work in the end, as Nikki had gotten herself her own One Wish Willow and had an implied wish for Bear to love her as much as she did. This in fact worked, but not for long. Shortly after Bear had died from that overdose, leaving entity Nikki devastated. She attempts to shoot herself, but the real Nikki resurfaces, met with the dead bodies of her closest friends.
There’s so many layers to this movie, from the small sparks of the real Nikki momentarily appearing, poem implications, and the usage of Forever by The Little Dippers. I now associate this sweet song to horror… fun.
It was more of a recap than anything, but there was a need to point out sections of the movie that ticked me in various ways. What a great movie. Watch it if spoilers don’t bother much, or rewatch it if it’s been watched.
