Kuromi is a cartoon character created in 2005 by Yuko Yamaguchi and the animation studio, Studio Comet. Kuromi is a female rabbit who has the role of the antagonist in the My Melody universe. It is said that Kuromi is actually a doppelganger of My Melody and the two rabbit characters look identical, except for some differences in their tails and attire.
Kuromi always wears a black jester hat with a pink skull on it that changes expressions to match Kuromi’s mood. When you translate her name from Japanese to English, it means “black beauty,” which really fits her style. She was born on October 31, which is the same day as Halloween. This make sense because Kuromi was originally created to be the mischievous and dark antagonist in the My Melody world.
Kuromi first came out in 2005 and has become really popular with young people all over the world, especially those in the punk, biker, and goth communities. She is one of Sanrio’s main characters and was voted the third most popular in the 2023 Sanrio Character Ranking, surpassing My Melody. Because so many people love her so much, Sanrio had created a bunch of shows, merch, and events all about Kuromi!
