The Merkava tanks are produced by and used by Israel. They serve as both a main battle tank and a troop carrier which makes them unique. While only being able to carrier a few soldiers in the rear, it is still a really cool design that no other MBT shares. The reason this is possible is due to the front mounted engine design of the Merkava; mounting the engine frontally allows for extra space in the rear. While the Merkava’s armor is lacking it is incredibly angled which makes ricochets more common. The Merkava also uses things like spaced armor and smaller armor panels for quicker repairs. The newer Merkava’s also feature a trophy system which destroys slow moving missiles and anti-tank projectiles. The ammunition is stored in fireproof containers minimizing damages if ammunition explodes. The frontally mounted engine also serves as an added protectant for the crew. Overall the armor design and layout of the tank is meant to prioritize crew survivability and multirole use. The cannon is a 120mm smoothbore capable of firing NATO made and Israeli made rounds. The Merkava MK4 is also capable of using cannon fired, laser guided, anti-tank missiles, and comes equipped with a 60mm internally fired mortar. It has a fire rate of 24 rounds per minute with an evaluation of 20 degrees and a depression of 7 degrees.
This photo shows the back of the Merkava which has an indent that leads to a hatch where the extra troops enter.
