The T-72M2 Moderna is a Slovakian made improved version of the Russian T-72. The Moderna features improved ERA (explosive reactive armor) and improved thermal sights. One of the most notable features though is the 30mm co-axial autocannon mounted to the side of the turret. The original design for the Moderna held two 20mm autocannons on each side of the turret capable of engaging air vehicles and helicopters doing close air support. The double 20mm were eventually replaced with the single 30mm in the final design for increased firepower against infantry, lightly armored vehicles and helicopters. While the 30mm cannon makes this vehicle unique, it also added some logistical issues; the increased weight from the ERA and 30mm required a more powerful engine to keep the vehicles maneuverability similar to the T-72’s. Originally the Moderna was designed to be sold as the new MBT (main battle tank) to replace the already existing T-72. Slovakia, after being split, wanted to keep their military and economy afloat while keeping their older tanks, which is where the Moderna comes in. Being a mix of Russian and western technology it was truly the best of both worlds, but using technology on this scale is incredibly expensive. The T-72M2 Moderna never left the development stage as it was deemed too expensive, with little interest in the project it was eventually scrapped.
