The artwork I have provided is a painting named “The Irritating Gentleman” made in 1864 by a German artist named Berthold Voltz. This artwork is a prime example of a genre that emerged during the 19th century, which is known as “Problem Picture.s” In the painting the women has her hair down, which during that time period signifies she is unmarried and in society, considered a child. She is also in black attire, possibly meaning she was just at or going to a funeral. Alongside her is her bag, decorated with pink floral, which represents her innocence. On the other hand, a much older man is seen invading her personal space and dropping ash on her bag to hit on her. Unable to escape, she is left suffering in silence, holding tight to her only protection (a hat pin) which was used by women in the 19th century for self-defense. This painting is not just an illustration of a women in the 1800s but a realistic scenario women experience daily. And by portraying this interaction as ordinary, the painting shows what appears to be mundane is, in fact a commentary on how women are expected to tolerate discomfort as part of their everyday lives.
