A white lily, also known as the Madonna lily and Lilium candidum scientifically, is a plant in the true lily family. The true lily family (lilium) are within the liliaceae family. Many lilies in the lilium family and look-alikes to the white lily (like lily of the valley) are actually toxic to humans if ingested; however, in Taiwan they use the bulbs and flowers as food.
They are native to the Balkans and the Middle East, and are naturalized in other parts of Europe.
They symbolize purity, innocence, rebirth, and beginnings. This makes them a popular flower for weddings, baptisms, and funerals! For example, in Chinese culture, they are considered good luck and symbolize being forever in love.
Unfortunately, cats are very sensitive to ingestion of this plant. Even just the pollen can be fatal. This is why it is strongly advised to not keep this plant when you have cats, alive or dried.
They can thrive indoors and outdoors, just requiring moist soil and sunlight. When indoors, their sweet fragrance can fill an entire room easily!
