The Sphynx is a breed of a hairless cat that is known for its wrinkly and sometimes oily skin. The cat’s skin can be almost any color or pattern. These cats must be bathed regularly because they don’t have fur to soak up oil. They have a bit of soft fuzz on their face, ears, feet, and tail, with ears that are very large and rounded tips. Their eyes are big and set wide apart with their eyes either being golden, green, or hazel. Sphynx cats are affectionate, outgoing, energetic, and intelligent. The breed started in the 1900s because of a natural genetic mutation in a regular cat with fur. When a rare hairless kitten was born, breeders began to carefully breed it with other cats, cats like the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex, to continue the breed. Two Sphynx cats can actually not be bred together because it doesn’t produce healthy kittens. Their hairlessness is caused by a recessive gene, which means both parent cats must carry the gene for a chance to have a hairless kitten.
