The B-1 Lancer is manufactured by and operated by the USA only. It is a variable wing sweeping heavy bomber capable of carrying up to 75,000 pounds of ordinance at Mach 1.25. The B-1 Lancer is the successor to the B-52 Stratofortress and the predecessor to the B-2 Spirit. The B-1, often called the Bone, is built for large bombing runs at varying altitudes depending on the mission’s requirements and weather. While the Bone is quite small compared to other heavy bombers it is still giant sitting at 150ft long with a 137 ft wingspan. Even with the Bone’s large airframe it still has 100 times smaller radar cross section than the B-52 featuring some radar absorbing material and a blended shape limiting the cross section. The reduced cross section along with an electronical warfare support aircraft does make the B-1 hard to detect but by no means invisible. The B-1 has been used successfully in many middle eastern countries in 1999, 2018, 2024 and 2025 proving it is effective and ready. Only 45 are in use today though because of the high maintenance and operating cost.
