The Korean War was a proxy war during the cold war which lasted from June twenty-fifth nineteen fifty to July twenty-seventh nineteen fifty three and it was an armed conflict between North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union; meanwhile, South Korea was supported by the United Nations but mainly the United States. It started after World War Two when Korea, which used to be a Japanese colony, was divided into two occupation zones by the Soviet Union and the United States at the thirty eighth parallel, with plans for a future independent state, but due to political disagreements both zones formed their own governments in 1948, with North Korea being led by Kim ll Sung in Pyongyang and South Korea being led by Syngman Rhee in Seoul. On June twenty-fifth nineteen fifty North Korea launched an invasion on South Korea with help from the Soviets and combat ended on July twenty-seventh nineteen fifty three. The casualties for North Koreans are an estimated one to two point five million and the casualties for South Koreans were approximately one million. This war was considered unimportant by the US back in America.
