Trichopodus trichopterus, or the Three Spot Gourami, is a species of fish native to Southeastern Asia, but has been introduced elsewhere.
They have two spots on each side of their body, and the third is counted in the form of the fish’s eye. They are also known as two-spot gourami in Malaysia due to the two spots.
Different types of morphs for the fish lead it to have different names. For example, crossing a “blue” gourami (blue morph) and a “gold” gourami (yellow morph) creates a “lavender” or “amethyst” gourami.
In Southeastern Asia, they are native to either standing or slow-moving, freshwater environments that range from China, mainland Southeast Asia, to Indonesia. They commonly live in swamps, marshes, canals, and low wetlands. Three spot gourami migrate during flood season from permanent bodies of water to flooded bodies of water, but they return when the season ends.
