The B-52 Stratofortress is an America long-range, heavy strategic bomber, that is capable of delivering massive bomb loads and nuclear bombs. The B-52’s nickname is the BUFF for Big Ugly Fat Fricker, I’m not allowed to use the actual word, due to its large size and length. The BUFF is capable of flying at altitudes of 50,000 to avoid many forms of anti-aircraft while it completes its mission. Entering service in 1955 it has had many combat opportunities including the Cold War where it was used as a nuclear deterrent, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War where it delivered 40% of the coalition forces munitions, Bosnia and Kosovo, War on Terror, and Anti-ISIS Campaigns in Qatar. During these conflicts it dropped both kinetic munitions and guided missiles. Thankfully the BUFF has never had to use a nuclear bomb in a combat situation. Although two situation have happened that could’ve gone very poorly, in 1961 a B-52 broke apart and dropped two nuclear bombs over North Carolina one of which almost detonated, and in 1968 one crashed spreading nuclear material in Greenland.
