Kneading, often referred to as “making biscuits,” is when a cat pushes its paws in and out on a soft surface, such as a blanket, several times a row. It is similar to how a person would knead dough. This behavior starts during kittenhood, because they usually knead their mother to help get milk while nursing. As they grow up, many cats will continue to kneadĀ because it makes them feel calm and safe. Kneading can also help cats relax before going to sleep.
Cats may also knead for other reasons too. Cats have scent glands between their paw pads, so when they are kneading, they will leave their scent behind to mark it as theirs. Some experts also theorize that cats knead to stretch their muscles and relieve tension in their limbs. Cats will often knead blankets because they are soft and comfortable, making it great for relaxing.
