Catnip is a plant in the mint family that grows easily in North America. It has light green leaves and small lavender flowers. People sometimes use the leaves to make tea, and can also be used in natural bug sprays. Catnip contains an oil called nepetalactone, which affects cats when they smell it. Cats react to catnip because they have a special scent organ called the vomeronasal gland on the roof of their mouth. This organ helps carry smells to the brain, which is why cats sometimes make a silly face after smelling something strong. Catnip can make cats feel happy, relaxed, or playful. Cats may also roll around, act more affectionate, or become very energetic, while other cats can act aggressive.
